Progress:

Quarterly Report: April 1-June 30, 2009
In our third year, in collaboration with our industry partner Fiber Innovation Technology, we produced a scent infused yarn with increased concentrations as compared with the previous run. The yarn is of sheath-core category with a core of polypropylene (PP) with the scent oils infused into the PP surrounded by a sheath of polylactic acid (PLA). This time we reached the maximum concentration in the fiber’s core until it would run satisfactorily.  The final loading was 15% of the scent compound in virgin PP for the fiber’s core component, which comprises 45% of the total fiber, by volume. This year we also produced scent-infused yarn with an antimicrobial additive. We have prepared scented knitted swatches with four different fragrance concentrations (0%, 33%, 50%, 67%, and 100% scented-yarn). We evaluated the durability of the scent by performing washing and drying (AATCC 135) tests of the scented scarf samples over repeated washings.
